There are approximately 43 different species of snakes in Alabama and only 6 of which are venomous. Snakes have more negative emotion attached to them than most other animals combined.   Snakes are a long reptile that can crawl on land and trees. Some snakes can even travel through water. Since we have such a varied ideal habitat snakes are routinely spotted. With so many different species of snakes in Alabama that come in various sizes, they all have varied feeding habits. While larger snakes may feed on rodents and small reptiles, the primary food source for smaller snakes are insects, worms and small vertebrates. Snakes are cold blooded and can only regulate their body temperatures with air temperatures and exposure to sunlight. When it is very hot snakes will seek shelter in shady area. On cold days, snakes will look for sunny areas to warm up. If the cold persists for an extended period of time, they will not be active at all.

There are some distinguishing characteristics between venomous and non-venomous snakes.  With only 6 venomous snakes in Alabama 5 are called pit vipers, the only non-pit viper is the coral snake. Pit vipers have pits on both sides of their face between eye and nostril. Pit vipers also have vertical pupils, thin necks and larger bodies. Pit vipers will have large, wide, triangular heads, several non-venomous snakes have the same feature.

While snakes are a great benefit to our environment, they can end up in places where they shouldn’t be some times like our houses and storage sheds.
